Ward 2: Several candidates step up to challenge the incumbent

In the northwest corner of Calgary, Ward 2 stretches from Ranchlands, past Stoney Trail and up into the new areas of Symons Valley and Nolan Hill.

As part of our Calgary Votes: What Matters project, CBC News set up at the Crowfoot branch of the Calgary Public Library and later outside of the Walmart in Sage Hill. Voters talked about the need for more affordable housing, worries about crime and car break-ins, hopes for the Green Line and frustrations over rising taxes, among other issues.

At the library, Arbour Lake resident Owen Schwartz, a family doctor who focuses on helping patients with stress, said he loves Calgary's parks and bike paths. He wants to see candidates who will preserve them and promote varied design in new areas.

"I've noticed that some of the new districts, they look sort of mundane. One house looks like another," he said.

Outside of the Walmart, Joel Cooper said the Green Line and homelessness are two issues he's following. The Green Line is something that's "highly requested," he said, and hopes candidates will make promises they can deliver on.
